Quantum connectivity with electro-optic conversion

Quantum computers could solve problems that ordinary computers cannot. To solve useful problems, however, massively large and complex devices are needed. Networking quantum devices could elegantly expand the computational space while easing the physical burden of large systems. Unfortunately, classical networks are not suitable to preserve fragile quantum states. However, the workhorse of classical networks — the electro-optic modulator, responsible for sending exabytes around the world each day — can in fact form the basis of a ‘quantum converter’ to link distant quantum systems. I will discuss how Miraex is developing such converters that will be critical as quantum machines become larger and more powerful in the years to come

Speaker

Chris Axline, Senior Quantum Engineer, Miraex
Chris studied physics at UCSB followed by a PhD in the Schoelkopf group at Yale University. There, he worked with superconducting qubits, with a focus on the transfer of information within quantum networks. From 2018–2022, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Trapped Ion Quantum Information group at ETH Zürich, where he worked with multi-wafer and integrated waveguide ion trap technologies in cryogenic systems. Studying the intersection of optical and superconducting technologies thus marks a natural progression, and since late 2022, Chris has become responsible for developing quantum devices at Miraex

Moderator

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
