We are pleased to announce and invite you to one of our weekly online zoom events.
Co-Packaged Optics: Technical Barriers and the Road to Mass Production
Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) is transitioning from pilot-scale development to commercial deployment, with a projected CAGR of 172% (2023–2030), reaching $9.3–23 Bn by 2030. A key inflection point is expected in 2025–2026: NVIDIA targets volume production of Rubin CPO-based rack systems in 2026 with shipments scaling from 200k GPUs in 2026 to 700k in 2027; network switch vendors including Broadcom, Cisco, and Marvell are set to introduce CPO-based platforms beginning in 2027; and TSMC has indicated mass production readiness within 12–18 months. However, packaging yield constraints, thermal management, and fiber-optic coupling remain major barriers to scale. Taiwan’s advanced semiconductor ecosystem—TSMC, ASE, and SPIL—has become the focal point of global R&D, while NVIDIA, Broadcom, AMD, and Marvell provide critical process integration insights that will determine the pace of CPO’s commercialization in hyperscale data center.
In this lunch chat, I will examine the technical and manufacturing challenges that define CPO’s scalability, highlight the role of Taiwan’s ecosystem in enabling mass production, and discuss the implications for future system architectures in hyperscale environments.
Speaker
Dr. Emma Xu
Dr. Emma Xu received her B.S. in Physics from the University of Texas, and subsequently her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University in New York City, with a focus on photon upconversion and photon avalanching at the nanoscale. Her research was published in Nature multiple times, including once a cover feature. She had previously founded a company, and was named to Forbes 30 under 30. Having moved to Europe in early 2025, she is passionate about bridging the Swiss photonics industry to Asia, to introduce and enhance collaborations and synergies on a global scale.
Moderator
Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, former Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
