Switzerland is recognized as a photonics cluster (see: Michael E. Porter: Five forces) and Swissphotonics is supporting it by networking activities. In order to support these networking activity Swissphotonics has funded in 2015 the start of eight Swiss National Labs, i.e. topical interest groups.
Today five topical interest groups are still active, namely hybrid integration, photovoltaics, education and also material processing and optical fibers.
The goal is that each topical interest group has has formal internal coordination to complement each other and that representation and networking within Photonics21 is shared.
| Hybrid Integration | Swiss PIC as well as Sensor Innovation Hub OST |
| Photovoltaics | Interest group light-havesting and light emitting technologies |
| Education | University group for Photonics education |
| Material processing | Academic labs working on processing material with lasers |
| Optical fibers | Interest group of fiber optic technology labs |
