Specialty Optical Fibers and their steep way to industrial applications

Abstract
The success of optical fibers in telecommunications was given by the purity of the silica that resulted from the production technique used, namely MCVD. One can attribute the overnight capture of the telecommunication markets by the optical fiber in the 1970's to this vapor based deposition technology. It allowed a thin and tiny optical component to advance to one of the giants in modern optics and photonics.
Around the 1990's it was seen that by rethinking some of the basic waveguiding concepts and courageously departing from vapor based production techniques many new opportunities could come up for science and photonic industry. However this was only possible at the price of a steep and intricate but fascinating research activity.
The goal of this workshop is to present the development and present state of microstructured optical fibers as well as to give some insights into alternative fiber production techniques. The main stress from the application point of view is put on the importance of hollow core fibers for the delivery of ultrashort laser pulses for materials processing.
