When Compute Is No Longer the Limit: Rethinking Optical Coating Design, Characterization and Production

The physics of optical thin films has not changed. What has changed is how much of it we can compute. Massively parallel hardware is now widely available — it is what made modern AI possible — and the machinery that trains neural networks, automatic differentiation, works just as well on exact optical models, with no neural network involved.

EulenStudio is built around that idea: a differentiable transfer-matrix engine in which every parameter of a stack carries a gradient, and whole populations of designs are evaluated at once. The point is not that the old workflow runs faster; different questions become answerable. In design: global searches instead of local refinement. In characterization: material models, interfaces and roughness fitted from your own spectra — and competing models tested against each other, because a model only counts once reality agrees with it. In production: uniformity, tooling factors and drift read directly from the coater. Which question in your optical coating work did you stop asking because it was out of computational reach?

Speaker

Sarina Bucher, CEO Eule27
Sarina Bucher is co-founder and CEO of Eule27 AG, a Swiss software company for optical thin-film engineering, based in Zug. Eule27 develops EulenStudio, one software suite spanning coating design, characterization, and closed-loop production control — including real-time reverse engineering of layer thicknesses from interference spectra, with the material's optical parameters co-fitted rather than fixed. Sarina brings extensive hands-on experience in optical interference coatings for architectural glass, display technology, and solar applications. Before becoming CEO of Eule27, she worked in the software industry as a product manager for business intelligence and analytics.

Moderator

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, President of Swiss PIC, former Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
