TAF by Solabs : A new segment in the antifog market

Solabs introduces the first thermal antifog solution (TAF by Solabs); a transparent, sunlight-activated antifogging coating that combines optical clarity with strong photothermal functionality. The design is engineered to achieve high absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, which accounts for roughly half of the solar energy. Upon illumination, the absorbed NIR light is converted into heat, elevating the surface temperature and thereby suppressing water droplet nucleation and fog formation. As a result, the coating exhibits more than a fourfold enhancement in antifogging resistance and a threefold faster defogging rate compared to uncoated surfaces. The coating remains effective even under low sunlight intensities (as low as 0.2 suns) and can be fabricated using standard physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques, such as e-beam evaporation or sputtering.

Speaker

Fabrice Bagnoud, Co-Founder & Technical Lead, Solabs Nanotechnology
Fabrice Bagnoud obtained his Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from ETH Zurich in 2023. From 2020 to 2023, alongside his studies, he worked at BKW AG in the district heating networks division, where he assumed the role of project manager during the early development phases of district heating projects. During his master’s thesis, he conducted research on a sunlight-selective metamaterial, which led to his participation in the ETH Pioneer Fellowship Program in 2024 under the supervision of Dr. Iwan Hächler. Building on this work, he co-founded Solabs Nanotechnology together with Dr. Iwan Hächler and Prof. Dr. Dimos Poulikakos, with the aim of commercializing this metamaterial technology.

Moderator

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, former Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
