We are pleased to announce and invite you to one of our weekly online zoom events.
Exploring the Terahertz Range: Advances in Time-Domain Spectroscopy and Imaging
The
terahertz (THz) frequency range, long considered the last unexplored region of the electromagnetic spectrum, is now emerging as a practical tool for materials characterization and imaging. In recent years, advances in femtosecond lasers, emitters, and detection technologies have made
THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) and imaging systems increasingly commercially relevant. The long-anticipated potential of the THz range is gradually becoming a practical reality, opening new opportunities for collaboration between academic and industrial photonics communities.
In this talk, we will discuss the status of the field and the growing range of THz applications in non-destructive materials testing and spectroscopy. We will present the
ultra-broadband THz-TDS system at ZHAW, developed in collaboration with
Rainbow Photonics AG, a spin-off of ETH Zurich. Recent examples from our research demonstrate how ultra-broadband THz spectroscopy provides valuable insights into materials ranging from polymers and semiconductors to novel solar cell materials. We will also address the challenges that remain in bridging the gap
between fundamental laboratory research and industrial implementation.
Speaker
Dr. Mojca Jazbinsek, Head THz Photonics Team, ZHAW
Mojca Jazbinsek is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the THz Photonics Team at the Institute of Computational Physics (ICP), Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). She obtained her PhD in Physics at the University of Ljubljana in 2001. She joined the research group of Prof. Peter Günter at ETH Zurich in 2002 as a postdoctoral researcher and as senior researcher, lecturer, and team leader from 2004 to 2010. From 2010 to 2013 she was CTO at Rainbow Photonics AG, before joining ZHAW in 2014. She is author/co-author of over 160 peer-reviewed publications, 7 invited book chapters and one book in the field of nonlinear optics and functional materials for optoelectronics and THz-wave applications.
Moderator
Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics.
