Illuminating faster datacenters with thin-film ferroelectrics

Integrated photonics has been the driving force for faster data transmission and scalable quantum computers. PICs are compact, efficient and can be manufactured in scale at a cheap price. Several material platforms have been explored so far in integrated photonics, each showing a strength in different fields of application. Si and InP platforms are known for their electro-optical modulation activities up to a certain bandwidth (< 40GHz). However, they suffer from large optical insertion losses and require large electronic powers to operate. Therefore, today’s photonic industry needs a material platform that is efficient, fast and consumes less power.

Thin-film Lithium Niobate (TFLN) is a material that solves these challenges and was discovered in the early 2000s. TFLN offers low optical loss, 2x higher modulation bandwidth and reduces the power consumption by 4x compared to other material paltform in photonics. However, there has been no established fabrication process to manufacture photonic chips out of this novel material. The common methods for fabrication of photonic devices in TFLN haven been suffering from efficiency and scalability, therefore, the industry has been hesitant to adopt this material. Luxtelligence is an EPFL spin-off that commercializes a new scalable manufacturing technique for TFLN.

Speaker

Dr. Mohammad Bereyhi, Co-founder and CEO of Luxtelligence
Dr. Mohammad Bereyhi is the co-founder and CEO of Luxtelligence SA, a spin-off from EPFL commercializing the strong IP portfolio that is based on more than 7 years of academic research. He obtained his PhD from EPFL in 2022 and he was awarded by Swiss Physical Society for his contribution to the field of metrology in 2023. He is a founder of ‘www.nanofab-net.org’ that is an open science champion from EPFL’s Open Science Initiative in 2019.

Moderator

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
