Specialty optical fiber production and applications in Switzerland

Tue, 28.02.2023, SIPBB, Biel

We invite to a joint workshop on

Specialty optical fiber production and applications in Switzerland

The three research institutions Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH-TI, University of Bern and Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne SIPBB jointly operate a drawing tower for optical fibers.

The tower is hosted inside the SIPBB. With its over 20m of height and a drawing furnace that can be operated at temperatures up to 2100°C is well suited for the production of a wide range of optical fiber types including standard fibers, microstructured fibers, doped active fibers, multi-material fibers just to name a few.  The steady increase of photonic applications in the fields of communication, medicine, sensing, photonic integrated circuits, lasers, lighting, computing goes hand in hand with growing opportunities for new fiber types.

The choice of the new location for the drawing tower, after it had been hosted for about 20 years at the University of Bern, was well pondered: the scientific crew that operates the drawing tower pursued the goal of strengthening the link between scientific and technological fiber developments with industrial needs. Placing the tower in a powerhouse of ideas like the SIPBB at the crossroad of science, technology and industry is warrant for dynamic and creative activities in the field of fibers and photonics.

The presentations in the workshop will give a short overview of the national and international status of optical fiber research and of industrial fiber applications. It will be rounded up by a guided tour through the drawing tower. A networking apero at the end will allow to develop new ideas and forge new projects.

The workshop is supported and co-sponsored by the following institutions: NTN Innovation Booster Photonics, Swissphotonics, BFH, University of Bern, SIPBB
