We are pleased to announce and invite you to one of our weekly online zoom events.
Scaling advanced applications with high-performance photonic integrated lasers
Lasers with fiber laser coherence have long been benchtop instruments: precise, but bulky, costly and hard to produce in volume. Hybrid silicon photonics lasers scale well but fall short on coherence. Deeplight, a spin-off from EPFL, closes this gap with photonic integrated lasers built on a wafer-scale, ultra-low loss silicon nitride platform. Our laser combines a semiconductor gain chip with a high Q microresonator and reaches Hz-level intrinsic linewidth in a hermetically sealed butterfly package. A monolithically integrated piezoelectric actuator tunes the laser about 100 times faster than thermo-optic tuning and produces mode-hop-free, highly linear frequency chirps. A second laser family, based on the Pockels effect in thin film lithium tantalate, extends the tuning bandwidth further.
These properties allow advanced applications such as fiber sensing, quantum key distribution and others to scale. Wafer-scale fabrication and automated packaging turn these lasers into field-deployable products that Deeplight ships to customers worldwide.
Speaker
Dr. Anat Siddharth, CTO at Deeplight
Anat Siddharth is Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Deeplight SA, a photonics company that develops ultra-low noise, frequency agile photonic integrated lasers and optical frequency combs. He received his B.Tech. in Engineering Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati in 2013. He received his M.Tech. in Applied Optics from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 2019. He did his doctoral research at EPFL in the Laboratory of Photonics and Quantum Measurements under the supervision of Prof. Tobias J. Kippenberg and received his Ph.D. in 2025. During his doctorate he held a PhD fellowship of the European Space Agency’s Open Space Innovation Platform.
His research focuses on low noise, frequency agile photonic integrated lasers. This includes piezoelectrically tunable lasers on silicon nitride, Pockels lasers on lithium niobate and lithium tantalate, and chip-scale lasers in the violet, blue and near-ultraviolet range. His work has been published in Nature Photonics, Nature Communications and Optica. He is a co-inventor on international patent applications for tunable integrated lasers, the technology at the core of Deeplight’s products. He has since led its development from laboratory demonstrations to packaged, field-deployable lasers that the company ships to customers worldwide.
Moderator
Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, President of Swiss PIC, former Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
