Designing photonic integrated circuits beyond telecom: new platforms and new wavelengths

Most PIC design tools and PDKs were built for telecom silicon photonics at 1310 and 1550 nm. Applications in quantum, sensing and biomedical instrumentation need visible and near-infrared light, and platforms such as silicon nitride and thin-film lithium niobate. Wave Photonics builds automated design technology that generates and optimises components across arbitrary wavelengths and platforms, and works with foundries and their customers to shorten the path from a first design to a working chip. The talk covers where the standard telecom design flow breaks down away from 1550 nm, what we do about it, and examples from designs we have taped out on foundry platforms.

Dr. James Lee, CEO Wavephotonics
Dr James Lee is Co-founder and CEO of Wave Photonics. He did his PhD in Toshiba's Quantum Information Group at the University of Cambridge, developing photon sources for quantum computing, and holds an MPhys in Physics from the University of Oxford. He founded Wave Photonics in 2021 and has grown it to a venture-backed team of 18, eleven of them with PhDs.

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, former Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
