Fiber Lasers in Medical Applications: From Advanced Ophthalmic Imaging to Precision Eye Surgery

Fiber lasers have become a key enabling technology across medical imaging and surgery, offering high stability, wavelength flexibility, and precise pulse control. In ophthalmology, fiber-based laser sources support advanced retinal imaging techniques that enable earlier disease detection and improved monitoring, while ultrafast fiber lasers are integral to precision eye surgery, including corneal and cataract procedures. Beyond the eye, fiber lasers are increasingly used in biomedical imaging, blood flow and oxygenation measurements, optogenetics, and intraoperative tissue differentiation. This presentation highlights selected examples of how modern fiber laser technologies are advancing medical applications, with a particular focus on ophthalmic imaging and surgery and their translation into robust clinical and OEM systems.

Speaker

Dr. Patrick Kolsch, Senior Market Development Manager NKT Photonics
Patrick Kolsch is Head of Global Market Development for Life Sciences and Biomedical Applications at NKT Photonics, where he works at the interface of fiber-laser technology, medical imaging, and clinical translation. His focus includes ultrafast and broadband fiber lasers for ophthalmic imaging, precision eye surgery, and broader biomedical applications, working closely with clinicians, researchers, and medical-device manufacturers to align emerging laser capabilities with real clinical needs. Prior to joining industry, he was a professor at the University of Washington, where his research focused on nonlinear optical spectroscopy and advanced optical system design for biomedical applications.

Moderator

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, former Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
