Smart Materials Meet Fiber Optics: A Novel Approach to Continuous Glucose Sensing

GlucoSet's continuous glucose monitor uses Fabry-Perot interferometry in a hair-thin fiber optic sensor integrated with arterial catheters. Initial in vivo studies achieve <7% MARD while maintaining accuracy under challenging ICU conditions—extreme pH, elevated lactate, high-dose medications, and hypothermia. The system combines glucose-responsive materials with optical sensing to isolate glucose from interfering blood components, enabling specific optical measurement in whole blood—solving the fundamental challenge that has limited optical glucose sensing. This enables reliable glycemic control in critically ill patients to reduce mortality and ICU complications.

Lukas Scherer, PhD in Cemistry is Chief Technology Officer of GlucoSet. With over 15 years of experience in medical device development, including senior R&D roles at Radiometer and research leadership at EMPA, Lukas Scherer brings deep expertise in combining novel smart materials with optical technologies for sensing applications.

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, former Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
