IBS coatings: Reliable and efficient production of low loss and precise optical coatings

Dr. Valentin Wittwer will present UTOM AG’s industrial grade ion beam sputtering (IBS) platform for producing high performance optical coatings from the UV to the mid infrared. UTOM’s state of the art IBS system enables ultra low loss, durable, and highly precise thin films suitable for demanding applications such as ultrafast lasers, metrology, spectroscopy, micromachining, and medical photonics.

Beyond its advanced equipment, UTOM offers deep expertise in photonics and coating design, allowing rapid understanding of customer needs and delivery of optimized, custom solutions with short lead times. From consulting and layer stack design to post deposition characterization, every step aligns with technical and commercial objectives. Through tightly controlled IBS processes, advanced coating design, and in house metrology, UTOM provides coatings with exceptional spectral accuracy, robustness, and reproducibility.

Dr. Valentin Wittwer, Co-founder and CEO of Utom AG
Dr. Valentin Wittwer founded Utom AG in 2023 and leads the company, which provides ion beam sputtering (IBS) coating services to the photonics industry and research institutions. In 2025 he completed the MAS MTEC program at ETH Zurich, deepening his expertise in management, technology, innovation, and economics, with his thesis focusing on production and operations management.

He received his Diploma in Physics and Ph.D. degree from ETH Zurich in 2008 and 2012, respectively. His doctoral research focused on the development of ultrafast semiconductor lasers. After a PostDoc at the University of Cambridge (UK), working on graphene based optical components he joined the University of Neuchâtel, where he continues to serve as Senior Scientist. In this role, he leads ion beam sputtering activities, manages collaborative projects with industrial and academic partners, and contributes to research in ultrafast lasers, frequency combs, and spectroscopy.

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, former Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
