Recent Developments of Micro-Optical Systems in Medical Endoscopy

Recent advances in micro-optical systems are driving innovation in medical endoscopy. This presentation outlines current developments in imaging technologies for minimally invasive surgery, including near-infrared (NIR) ICG-assisted endoscopes, 3D systems and camera modules using polymer lenses. The focus is on optical design trends, integration of miniaturized components and the role of precision assembly in achieving high performance across the visible and NIR spectrum. These advancements contribute to more compact, efficient and versatile endoscopic systems that improve visualization and clinical outcomes.

Chris Jung, CTO/ Leiter R&D, Mikrop AG
Chris Jung is Chief Technology Officer and member of the executive board at Mikrop AG, Switzerland. He holds a Master’s degree in Medical Engineering from the University of Stuttgart, with a focus on optical and microsystem technologies. Before his current role, he led an R&D Team at Mikrop AG, managing innovation and customer projects in optical system design, polymer optics and miniaturized imaging modules. His professional background covers the full spectrum from research and feasibility studies to serial production of high-precision optical assemblies for medical applications.

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, former Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
