Rapid Optimization of Process Parameters With Machine Learning and Automated Data Acquisition

Optimizing laser processes is historically challenging, requiring extensive and costly experimentation. To solve this issue, we apply Bayesian optimization for process parameter optimization to laser cutting, welding, and polishing. We demonstrate how readily available Bayesian optimization frameworks enable efficient optimization of laser processes with only modest expert knowledge. Using automated data acquisition and evaluation, parameter optimization can even be carried out fully automatically. Case studies on laser cutting, welding, and polishing highlight its adaptability to real-world manufacturing scenarios. Moreover, the examples emphasize that with suitable cost functions and boundaries an acceptable optimization result can be achieved after a reasonable number of experiments.

Speaker

Prof. Dr. Andreas Michalowski, IFSW, University of Stuttgart
Andreas Michalowski studied physics at the Technical University of Dortmund, graduating with a diploma degree. He then worked as a research assistant at the IFSW, focusing on materials processing with ultrashort laser pulses, which was also the thematic focus of his doctorate. In 2011 he started at Bosch Research as a scientist and was responsible for process fundamentals and simulation for machining with ultrashort pulses. Since 2018 he was senior expert responsible for virtual process development and later additionally for hybrid modeling (physics + machine learning) for laser material processing. Since August 2022 Andreas Michalowski is professor at the IFSW at the University of Stuttgart, focusing on laser technology in manufacturing

Moderator

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
