Femtosurf - high-throughput fs laser machine with a solid state 200 W-level laser

The Femtosurf project focuses on developing and optimizing femtosecond laser-based technologies for advanced surface functionalization in industrial applications. By utilizing the ultra-short pulse duration of femtosecond lasers, the project aims to create precise micro- and nano-scale surface textures, enhancing material properties such as wettability, friction reduction, and corrosion resistance. A key innovation is the significant increase in process throughput, achieved through the use of a high-power 200 W laser source operating at a high repetition rate and the integration of a 5-axis mechanical interpolation system combined with 3 fast optical axes, enabling highly efficient, precise, and scalable processing across a wide range of materials, including metals, polymers, and ceramics, with minimal thermal damage. Femtosurf's goal is to drive advances in laser surface engineering, providing cutting-edge solutions for industries like aerospace, biomedical, and automotive, while also focusing on optimizing energy efficiency and promoting sustainability in laser-based manufacturing.

Speaker

Francesco Impaziente, SUPSI
Francesco Impaziente received his Bachelor and Master degrees in Engineering Physics, with specialization in Photonics, at Politecnico di Milano. He developed his skills both in the academic and industrial fields, becoming a specialist in designing and implementing advanced laser systems for industrial applications and laser process optimization. He is currently employed as a researcher in laser-based manufacturing processes at the “Automation, Robotics and Machine Laboratory” of the SUPSI. His contributions include involvement in key projects such as Femtosurf, Mesomorph, and WISE, which focus on femtosecond laser ablation of metals and selective laser etching of glass.

Moderator

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
