Recovering Materials from Mixed Plastic Waste, Using Light

Current car recycling processes recover most metals but leave behind 20% of materials as waste, primarily mixed plastics and minerals. This "automotive shredder residue" is typically disposed of in incinerators or landfills, with no other industrial-scale solution available. At Grensol, we aim to close the loop by converting these residues into valuable raw materials. Our innovative Photolysis process breaks down mixed plastics with intense light flashes, producing CO₂-neutral carbon black and syngas. Residual metals and minerals are also recovered for recycling. The process is faster and cleaner than conventional pyrolysis, minimizing pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. By transforming ASR into valuable resources, this approach promotes sustainability and advances the circular economy.

With 20+ years of experience, he has led the transformation and management of industrial, metals & mining, and infrastructure projects for Glencore, EuroChem and clients of McKinsey. His career includes successfully revitalizing underperforming businesses, delivering a total annual EBITDA improvement of USD 500 million, and leading M&A transactions worth over USD 1 billion. He led Glencore’s metal production and recycling business division with over 3’000 people internationally. He holds an engineering degree (Indian Institute of Technology) and an MBA (Harvard Business School).

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
