Joint symposium organized by Swissphotonics in collaboration with NCCR MUST and the association Inartis NCCR MUST: Novel tools for the industry

Swissphotonics has decided to cancel thisworkshop due to lack of interest for this topic.


The NCCR MUST is a massive interdisciplinary research program (4Mio/year for 8 to 12 years) launched by the Swiss National Science Foundation in 2010. It brings together 16 Swiss research groups working in Ultrafast Science across the fields of physics and chemistry.



In this symposium we present three novel tools which are developed within the NCCR MUST effort and which have a high potential for the industry.

1. Synthesis by coherent control: Prof. J.P. Wolf from the University of Geneva presents latest results on steering and optmizing chemical processes by a sequence of carefully selected (in frequency and time) short lightpulses. It is envisoned that these laboratory results can be scaled up for industrial production.

2. Destruction free structural analysis: Profs. Schertler and Patterson from the PSI present the leading short pulse x-ray source (SwissFEL). These x-ray pulses are so short that "destruction free" structural analysis can be done. The info is gathered before the sample gets damaged. This opens up structural analysis to a whole class of new materials.

3. Modeling: Computer models mirroring real chemical processes have made great progress and have become, thanks to powerful computers and algorythms, useful predictive tools. This is recognized by this years Nobel prize for Chemistry to the modeling effort of Karplus, Levitt and Warshel. Prof. Meuwly from the University of Basel who is still working with one of the Nobel Laureates (Martin Karplus) will introduce you into these powerful computer models.
